Camborne School of Mines Hockey

WHO ARE WE?

Our hockey club is for students at the Camborne School of Mines in Cornwall. Our men’s and ladies’ clubs are for players of all abilities and experiences, including people new to the sport. We welcome Undergraduates, Masters and Postgraduate students. We take part in a county knock-out cup competition, a summer mixed league and in the competition that hosts the second oldest varsity match in the world, the "Bottle Match".

WHERE WILL THE MONEY GO

  • Umpire Qualifications: Having qualified umpires within our club is absolutely essential. At the moment, a lack of available umpires can be the reason games are cancelled, which is incredibly frustrating for everyone involved. We’d like to fund some of our members to complete umpiring courses, so they can officiate our home games confidently and professionally.
  • Club sticks and New Training Equipment: We would like to invest in agility equipment like ladders and hurdles to help our players improve their technique, speed, and coordination during training. We’d also like to purchase spare hockey sticks and basic gear, which will be crucial for making the club more inclusive, as it allows new members to try hockey without needing to buy their own equipment straight away.
  • Supporting the new Ladies’ third team: Our Ladies’ club has grown significantly this year, so much that we have been able to establish another team, currently the ‘social team’. We would like to take the next step by registering this as an official third team in the league next season. This will mean we can offer more players the opportunity to play competitive hockey, which will help our club to grow and develop, benefitting all club members. To fund this new team we’ll need to cover costs like training pitch hire, league affiliation fees, home game costs and travel costs for away games.

HOW WE ARE TACKLING THE CHALLENGE

We plan to utilise our existing weekly fitness routines and expand on them during Sports Challenge Week to maximise participation and log as many miles as possible:

  • Run Club: Our weekly run club, which already meets twice a week, will focus on longer runs and encourage maximum attendance from all members. To ensure inclusivity, we’ll offer a variety of routes and distances, catering to both confident runners and beginners. This will allow everyone to contribute their miles in a way that suits their abilities.
  • Team Walks: For accessibility, we will organise group walks along our beautiful Cornish coastline. This activity will provide an opportunity for members of all fitness levels to log miles and promote a supportive team environment.
  • Cycling Challenges: We’ll leverage the strength of our top cyclists by organising daily rides of approx. 100 km, creating a headline challenge to inspire donations. We currently have three members who are committed cyclists and can take on these rides, which we could potentially turn into a sponsored event. Team cycling sessions will also be offered for members who prefer shorter or more social rides.
  • Sea Swimming: For those looking for a different way to contribute miles, we’ll offer sea swimming sessions, taking full advantage of our unique coastal location. Many members already swim regularly, and this provides an engaging and inclusive option for those who may not feel as comfortable running or cycling.

OUR FUNDRAISING

We have developed a three-pronged approach to fundraising, ensuring we not only raise funds but also getting into the spirit of Sports Challenge Week by engaging with both our members and the wider community.

1. Bake Sale on campus: A classic and effective approach, we’ll hold a bake sale on our Penryn campus in the lead-up to Sports Challenge Week. Members will bake and sell goods, raising funds while spreading awareness of Sports Challenge Week and promoting our other planned fundraising events.

2. Social Events: Thursday Night at the local club Mango’s: A relaxed social evening where we will charge a small entry fee (£2-£3), with all proceeds going toward our pot. This event will provide an opportunity for members, students and the wider community to engage with our club in a non-sporting setting.

- Quiz Night at Grapes or Fives: We’ll host a quiz night fundraiser open to the wider community. With a £3 entry fee, participants can enjoy a fun evening, while prizes will encourage strong turnout.

3. Fun Hockey Tournament: We currently have plans to host a local hockey tournament, inviting students and sports societies from across campus, such as CSM Rugby, Football, Netball, and any other societies interested, to participate. The tournament will be open to players of all skill levels, with entry fees set at £2 per person. Additional funds will be raised through food and non-alcoholic drink sales during the event, along with a donation area for anyone wishing to contribute further.

This tournament will be a great way to raise money while aligning with the goals of Sports Challenge Week: promoting fitness and getting involved. It also serves to showcase hockey as a fun, accessible sport, bringing together societies and the wider university community.
