University of Exeter Boat Club (UoEBC)
WHO ARE WE?
The University of Exeter Boat Club (Rowing) is able to cater for people who want to try rowing at all levels; from complete beginners to those looking to trial for the GB squad and compete internationally. With a 200-strong membership base, this is also one of the greatest clubs to meet new faces and enjoy the huge social aspect of the sport.
The club is divided into senior and novice squads, the novices are coached by experienced members on the senior squad. The Nicholas Bull Boathouse opened in 2012 and is situated on the scenic Exeter Canal only 15 minutes from campus.
We also have our very own on-campus gym facilities which enable us to successfully compete in all British Universities and Colleges Sport (BUCS) competitions against other universities, as well as all the major winter head races. The summer racing season draws to an emphatic close with the famous Henley Women’s, and Henley Royal Regatta.
WHERE WILL THE MONEY GO
Having purchased a men's 8+ shell this year, we are looking to set up next year's committee to be able to do the same for a women's 8+ shell to ensure that they are offered the same opportunities as the men's side of the club.
WHY IS THIS IMPORTANT
The men's shell was a priority purchase for the club and so the women should be offered the same opportunity as their shells will not give them the same advantage as the men now have to be able to complete at the high performing level we anticipate.
The club is growing enormously and so to facilitate mass participation we need more large crew shells to ensure as many athletes as possible can get out on the water. The alumni love to see successful crews at Henley and this will help us to reach that goal for the women's squad as it is exceptionally challenging for them to qualify to Henley Royal Regatta.
HOW WE ARE TACKLING THE CHALLENGE
We do vast amounts of mileage on the ergos, bike ergos, as well as on the water; I believe we could lay down some seriously impressive mileage adding this up across all of our athletes and how much they train. We anticipate most athletes completing over 100km/week in rowing alone across our senior women's and men's squads as well as their novice counter parts.
We would also like to put on specific events within the week like inter squad circuits sessions on the astros and large squad pelotons and runs.
We would also look into running events that could be held to raise awareness of Sports Challenge Week and to raise money, which we'll share with our followers. These could include fun sprint races on the water and cold plunges at Dawlish. The club loves these mass participation events, and the followers of our social media find this content really engaging.
